About Joan Shearer
I am a semi-representational, abstract artist.
You will recognize the subjects in my paintings yet
they are unique to my mind’s eye. As a youth growing up
in Ottawa under the tutelage of my Grandfather, famed
abstract Artist Brodie Shearer, I was classically taught.
As Brodie did, I communicate with bold colour and lines to direct your eyes
to whatever I want you to see. I wish for you to visit for a while.
My work differs to his in that it is subjectively more contemporary
with my own slightly offbeat sense of humour.
After my Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, I lived abroad and painted the sights,
coming back to Calgary in 2000 where I’ve had my studio ever since.
I have worked with numerous groups including the CBE and the City of
Calgary on large mural projects and have sold over 400 original works art and
prints all over Canada as well as France and Switzerland.
I am the Founder of art!Bowmont, a Montgomery and Bowness Artist Collective.
The members of art!Bowmont strongly believe in community based projects and sharing
creative ideas, aspirations and artistic challenges. What makes us
unique is that we are a group of artists unified by intent rather than
style. We have just had our Third annual show,
“art!Bowmont: Art in the Park”,
an outdoor art show that marries art and nature.
It was on Sept. 8, 2012, Shouldice Park and appreciated by art-lovers
from around the city.
